This is the Advent greeting we sent out this year. We want to make sure we reach all our gente so we translated it into Spanish.
ADVENT 2016
Dear Friends of Casa Maria,
Thanks to the generosity of you all, four hundred to five hundred individuals and more than 150 families continue to eat here every day. Without you it would not be possible to practice these works of mercy daily.
We all continue to survive but for sure the times are a changing… for the worse! We expect that low income people, especially black and brown people, will very soon come under
extreme attack.
Everything we have worked for in the last year or so seems to have turned to crap. This includes the failed Pima County Bond Election, the 42 day bus strike, the increase in bus fares, our barrio schools being stripped of their magnet status meaning less funding, and last
We celebrate mass at 10:00 am every Monday, behind the soup kitchen.
Regular celebrants include Fr. Jim Hobert, Msgr. Tom Cahalane, Fr. Bart Hutchinson O.P., Fr. Tom Tureman, and Fr. David Guzman.
but certainly not least, the recent election.
It is all very disheartening. I feel exhausted and
depressed.
But not defeated.
“Put everything in the hands of the Lord” is the refrain I’ve heard many times lately, both in English and Español.
This initially seemed to me kind of trite and condescending.
But it really is true.
Another way of saying it is that the ultimate way we fight demonic worldly oppression is by generating spiritual power by constantly praying to our Creator God and by cultivating daily a deeper, more intimate relationship with Jesus.
May this Advent season afflict the consciences of all believers, awaken us and give us all the strength and wisdom to struggle mightily with and for the oppressed in our midst, the more local the better!

Queridos amigos de Casa Maria,
Gracias a la generosidad de todos ustedes, de cuatrocientos a quinientos individuos y más de 150 familias continuan a alimentarse aquí todos los días. Sin ustedes no sería posible practicar estos actos de misericordia a diario.
Todos continuamos a sobrevivir pero de seguro los tiempos están cambiando… ¡y están empeorando! Suponemos que la gente de bajos recursos, especialmente la gente de color, muy pronto estará bajo un extremo ataque.
Todo por lo que hemos luchado este último año parece haberse ido a la fregada. Esto viene incluyendo las elecciones de los bonos del condado de Pima, la huelga de camiones de 42 días, el aumento en las tarifas de los camiones, la eliminación del título “magnet” (para
escuelas especializadas) de nuestras escuelas en los barrios, lo cual quiere decir que recibirán menos fondos, y por último no menos importante, las elecciones más recientes.
Todo es muy decepcionante. Me siento cansado y deprimido.
Pero no vencido.
“Pon todo en las manos del Señor” es el refrán que he escuchado muchas veces últimamente, tanto en inglés como en español.
Al principio esta frase se me hacía un poco trivial y altiva.
Pero realmente es cierto.
Otro modo de decirlo es que la manera definitiva de luchar contra la opresión global malévola es obtener fuerza espiritual por medio de la oración constante a nuestro Creador y cultivar diariamente una relación más profunda e íntima con Jesús.
Que esta temporada de adviento aflija las consciencias de todos los creyentes, que nos despierte y dé a todos la fuerza y sabiduría de luchar vigorosamente con y para los oprimidos entre nosotros, ¡entre más unidos estemos, mejor!
