Call the City Council today (especially Uhlich, Romero and Cunningham) and tell them:
DO NOT RAISE BUS FARES!!!
And
Please attend the Bus Rider rally/party on Tuesday, May 17 at 5 pm at City Hall. The birria, rice and beans will be delicious!
In addition to bus riders, speakers will be:
- Msgr Tom Cahalane, Pastor, Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church
- Fred Yamashita, President, Pima Area Labor Federation
- Dan Linhart, Chief Steward, Teamsters Local 104
So you know, the action around this issue will probably take place at the Mayor and Council Study Session that afternoon at approximately 2:30 when they discuss the budget. I, Brian Flagg, and at least a few others will attend.
City Manager Mike Ortega told us a few days ago that at the Public Hearing on the budget on Tuesday night (it is #16 on the Agenda and will be very late) he plans to state that $1.7 million will be cut from Transit and the specifics of that $1.7 million will be decided in August.
That would be a good thing, a small victory for us, as it would give us time to organize for a better outcome. We hope that this is what happens at the afternoon study session, instead of them voting now to increase virtually all the fares.
So, come at 2:30 if you can, definitely come at 5 pm for the party, and don’t worry about the Public Hearing in the evening. Numerous Bus Riders Union members testified at the last Public Hearing on the budget on May 3rd.

El evento acerca de este problema será en la reunión del Alcalde y el Consejo esa tarde a las 2:30 cuando ellos hablen del presupuesto. Yo, Brian Flagg y por lo menos otras dos personas más iremos.
El Manejador de la Ciudad Mike Ortega nos dijo hace un par de días que la Audiencia Publica acerca del Presupuesto seria el Martes en la noche (es el #16 en la agenda y lo harán muy tarde) el Planea recortar $1.7 millones del tránsito y los detalles específicos de esos 1.7 millones se decidirán en Agosto.
Eso sería una cosa buena, una pequeña victoria para nosotros, así nos dará tiempo para organizarnos mejor. Esperamos que esto pase esta tarde en la junta, en lugar de que voten para aumentar las tarifas.
Ven a las 2:30 si puedes, y definitivamente ven a las 5pm a la fiesta, y no te preocupes de la audiencia pública en la tarde. Muchos miembros de La Unión de Pasajeros del Camión testificaron en la última audiencia pública acerca del presupuesto en Mayo 3.
