My pilgrimage last month to the most holy, most sacred site in the Americas, Mount Tepeyac in Mexico City has made me realize that the Virgen Mary (aka the Virgen of Guadalupe) and her son Jesus are all about conversion, which is all about spiritual power, manifest here and now from within the Empire to change things (no pie in the sky).
Since returning from Mexico I have read , for the third or fourth time. 
This book continues to inspire and challenge the hell out of me.
He begins the book with the entire text translated from the original Nahuatl language, and then does a verse by verse commentary on it. He immerses the story in its historical context and how the Native population would come close to being annihilated by war and disease, and about the arrogance of the white Europeans who saw themselves as having absolute dominion over all the non-Christian lands of the Globe. But he talks mostly about how mystical and cosmic the Guadalupe story is. He says that to really understand and appreciate Our Lady of Guadalupe, every attempt must be made not just to read it but to experience it with all the senses, the mind and the heart.
He also felt that the story of Guadalupe cannot be hidden by relegating Our Lady to the sphere of the popular devotion of the uninformed masses of the Mexican Catholics. Instead he insists that no other event since Pentecost has had such a revolutionary, profound, lasting, far-reaching, healing and liberating impact on Christianity.
Because of this extraordinary encounter with the Virgen, Juan Diego is converted from a dark-skinned downtrodden Native man, who had his religion and culture brutally stripped from him by the conquerors, and transformed into a man with so much spiritual power that he was able to humbly and forcefully go to the white Spanish Bishop to verify that Juan was not lying. He was converted by the beauty of the flowers and the tilma with her image on it, and he indeed built the Church that she asked him to build.
And what about conversion for you and me?
It is all about an ongoing, intimate, personal encounter with Jesus of the Gospels. And in the Americas it can also be about a loving personal relationship with the Mother of Jesus who came to Juan Diego, the Bishop, and all of us as La Virgen de Guadalupe!
She is there to console us, to inspire us, and to provide beauty and healing to us on the path of our daily lives. She is the source of power to liberate all those who still suffer from oppression and the chains of poverty.
Elizondo talks about her great beauty and how she converts through being gentle, tender and alluring. It’s like being converted to the joy of the gospel by falling in love with her, kind of like the Jesuits urge you to fall in love with Jesus! She is no less the feminization of God!
I can think and read and write all about the Virgen and Jesus, but now is the time to experience Jesus and the Virgen and have that manifest in my life.
God give me the grace to deepen my encounter with You and guide me and all la gente down the path of conversion,
And may the spiritual power necessary to further the liberation struggle of Your people explode right here in Tucson!!!

Mi peregrinaje el mes pasado al más sagrado, santo sitio de las Américas, Cerro del
Tepeyac en la Ciudad de México me ha hecho realizar que la Virgen María (La Virgen de Guadalupe) y su hijo Jesús es todo acerca de conversión, acerca de poder espiritual, manifestado aquí y ahora para cambiar las cosas.
Desde que regrese de México he estado leyendo ‘Guadalupe, Madre de la Nueva
Creación’, de P. Virgil Elizondo, por tercera o cuarta vez. Este libro continúa inspirándome y retándome a salir de mi mismo.
El empezó el libro traduciéndolo de su lenguaje original Náhuatl, tradujo verso por verso he hizo comentario después de cada verso. Él se metió en la historia en su contexto histórico, de como los Nativos estuvieron cerca de ser aniquilados por las guerras y las enfermedades, y acerca de la arrogancia de los Europeos que se vieron como si ellos tenían el dominio absoluto de las tierras de los no-cristianos en el mundo. Pero hablo más de la historia mística y cósmica de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Él dice que, para entender y apreciar a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, cada vez que se lee el libro es con la disposición de experimentarlo con todos los sentidos, mente y corazón.
También el sintió que la historia de Guadalupe no puede estar escondida por quitar Nuestra Señora a la devoción de las misas de los Católicos Mexicanos mal informados. El insiste que no hay otro evento desde pentecostés que haya tenido tanto impacto en la Cristiandad tan profundo, duradero, de gran alcance, de sanación y liberación.
Por este extraordinario encuentro con la Virgen, Juan Diego se convirtió de un hombre Nativo oprimido, que tenía su cultura y religión brutalmente despojada por sus conquistadores a un hombre muy espiritual que con humildad y fortaleza va con el Obispo Español para verificar que no estaba mintiendo. Él fue convertido por la belleza de las flores y la tilma con la imagen de Ella, y el construyo la Iglesia que Ella le pidió que construyera.
¿Y qué de la conversión para ti y para mí?
Todo es acerca de un encuentro personal con Jesús en los Evangelios. ¡Y en las Américas también puede ser teniendo una relación personal con la Madre de Jesús La Virgen de Guadalupe que se le apareció a Juan Diego, al Obispo, y a todos nosotros!
Ella está ahí para consolarnos, inspirarnos, y proveer sanación y cualidades en nuestro caminar diario. Ella es la fuente de liberación para todos aquellos que siguen sufriendo las cadenas de la pobreza y opresión.
Elizondo habla acerca de grandes cualidades y de como ella convierte a las personas a ser amables, tiernos y encantadores. ¡Es como si fueras convertido por la alegría del evangelio enamorándote de ella, como una urgencia Jesuita que te hace enamorarte de Jesús!
Yo puedo pensar, leer y escribir todo acerca de la Virgen y Jesús, pero ahora es tiempo de experimentar a Jesús y la Virgen y dejar que se manifiesten en mi vida.
¡Dios dame la gracia de tener un encuentro más profundo contigo y guíame y a toda la gente en el camino de conversión,
y danos el poder espiritual necesario para quitar los obstáculos de Tu gente explotada aquí en Tucson!!!
