Padre Juan Elias is a most profound and soulful guy. For weeks now at our parish Santa Cruz Catholic, he has been using the Gospel readings to awaken us to the fact that we need to more deeply encounter Jesus and that very soon, Lent would be upon us.
He has been emphatic that this is a great opportunity for us to figure out, in the context of who we are as Catholics, as disciples of Jesus, what our mission in life is!
I find myself seriously challenged, both personally and professionally.
The Holy Father is another inspirational hombre. Not only does he preach non-stop about the Catholic faithful moving out of their comfort zones and onto the peripheries, he’s gonna be Mexico in a few days … and not in Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta. He’s going to be with the people in Chiapas, Mexico City, and Ciudad Juarez!
On some level, being at Casa Maria, I’m already on the periphery. But how effective are we at alleviating the suffering of gente living in poverty in Tucson? I submit that I and we need to seriously deepen our encounter with Jesus and 
radically up our game. We and I need to be much more open to receiving the power to be more fearless, more creative, more relational, and more willing to take risks as we continue to organize around issues such as transit justice and public education.
May this Lenten season inspire me and all of us to discover and fulfill our mission to the nth degree!

De cierto modo, estando en Casa María, ya estoy en la circunferencia. ¿Pero qué tan exitosos somos calmando el sufrimiento de la gente que vive en la pobreza aquí en Tucson? Yo digo que ustedes y yo necesitamos profundizar seriamente en nuestro encuentro con Jesús y ser mejor. Necesitamos ser más abiertos para recibir el poder, la gracia para ser más audaces, más efectivos, más racionales, y más dispuestos a arriesgarnos mientras continuamos organizándonos en temas como justicia en el transporte y la educación pública.
Que este tiempo de cuaresma nos inspire a descubrir y cumplir nuestra misión a un nivel más alto!
