The other day I was talking to the Casa Maria diners and some of the volunteers who come from all parts of Tucson. They might be having a hard time but they are paying attention. Recent events have given us all a lot to think about, especially about what the future holds for Tucson families.
The City has been telling us that they are broke for some time. They have cut programs for many. Higher bus fares go into effect on January 1 and the City is now saying they want us to give them a half cent sales tax.
A few weeks ago the City said it found 9 to 10 million dollars. So the City decided to give $1,000 bonuses to city employees. The problem is that city employees earn about 10% more than the average citizen.The citizens who pay the taxes are the ones who ultimately pay city employees. Many tax paying families are having a hard time making ends meet and are not able to pay for Christmas presents.
So our Mayor and Council have given our tax money to city employees at Christmas. That $9 to $10 million should have been used to help the people who pay the taxes. Right now they need it more, but the city did not even see that. Why? Not too long ago City Manager Miranda, also during a budget cutting time, said he was worried about staff morale and had the Mayor and Council give them a great raise. What about our morale?
The other day the Daily Star reported that the city owned a $1.7 million plane that the police department really didn’t need. So the solution to this problem of having wealth you don’t need or want is to give it to some other government, in this case Pinal County. They could have used it to satisfy unmet needs for the people of Tucson.
The Mayor and Council need to apply some of the insights being generated about why Clinton lost the election: tone deaf, insensitive, pandering to interest groups, etc. Hilary couldn’t hear and didn’t listen to the working people.

El otro día hablaba con los clientes de Casa María y algunos voluntarios que vienen de todos lados de Tucson. Pudiera ser que batallando, pero están poniendo atención. Los sucesos recientes nos han dado mucho en qué pensar, especialmente acerca de lo que trae el futuro para las familias en Tucson.
Por un tiempo el municipio nos ha dicho que están arruinados. Han limitado los programas para mucha gente. El aumento de las tarifas del camión entrará en vigor el 1 de enero y el municipio ahora nos está pidiendo que pagemos un impuesto al valor agregado de medio centavo por cada dólar.
Hace unas semanas el municipio dijo que encontró de $9 a $10 millones, así que la ciudad decidió darles a los empleados municipales $1,000 en bonos. El problema es que los empleados municipales ganan alrededor del 10% más que el ciudadano común y corriente. Los ciudadanos que pagan los impuestos son los que al final les pagan a los empleados municipales. Muchas familias que pagan impuestos están batallando para salir adelante y no les alcanza para los regalos navideños.
Entonces nuestro alcalde y el consejo les han dado a los empleados municipales el dinero de nuestros impuestos para Navidad. Esos $9 a $10 millones se hubieran utilizado para ayudar a la gente que paga los impuestos. Ahora mismo ellos lo necesitan más, pero el municipio ni siquiera reconoció eso. ¿Por qué? No hace mucho que el administrador municipal Miranda, también durante una reducción de presupuesto, dijo que le preocupaba la moral de los empleados y les sugirió al alcalde y al consejo que les dieran un aumento de salario. ¿Qué tal la moral de nosotros?
El otro día el periódico Arizona Daily Star reportó que el municipio tiene un avión que vale $1.7 millones y que en verdad el departamento de policía no lo necesita . Entonces la solución para este problema de tener dinero que no se necesita o quiere es dárselo a otro gobierno, en este caso el condado Pinal. Pudieron haberlo utilizado para satisfacer las necesidades de la gente de Tucson.
El alcalde y el consejo tienen que aplicar algunos de los conocimientos que han salido acerca de las razones por las cuales Clinton perdió las elecciones: fue incapaz de captar a la gente común, fue insensible y complaciente con los grupos de interés. Hilary no pudo oír y eligió no escuchar a la población activa.
