I’ve been reflecting about the local elections a lot lately, especially the TUSD school board election. It is truly disgusting that Jim Click and his buddies bought the election for Mark Stegeman and people like him who do not have the best interest of our children in mind.
Jim Click is a known philanthropist, donating to charities and education. But really, is it a cover so he looks good while putting people in positions of power to pass policy that really hurts brown and black communities? It sure seems that way.
Jim Click is a member of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and as I remember it, John Pedicone was their pick for superintendent of TUSD in 2010. With the help of Stegeman on the board they ensured that he got voted in. His opponents were 3 candidates (Kenneth Baca, Lupita Cavazos-Garcia and Edith Macklin Isquierdo) who I feel would have better represented the students of color in TUSD and who also supported the highly successful Mexican-American Studies program that was later dismantled by Pedicone. Stegeman was part of the board majority at the time and was openly opposed to MAS.
Together they were able to close a bunch of schools and get rid of MAS, a program which was helping brown students raise their test scores, graduate from high school and go to college.
It was an exhausting struggle that ultimately brought our community together to fight for our students. In the end, the community voted to change the board majority and elected people to the school board that better represented TUSD (Cam Juarez and Kristel Foster).
TUSD is over 70% Latino and around 80% minority, but starting January the board will only have one Latin@ board member.
That just doesn’t make sense to me. How is it that a district that is nearly 80% minority is represented by a board that is only 20% minority?
I hate making things about race but in the current state that our country is in race cannot be ignored.
I was talking with a TUSD administrator recently about our current Superintendent H.T. Sanchez. This person said that they do not understand how so many people hate Dr. Sanchez. Though they may not always agree, this administrator felt that Dr. Sanchez was very competent, open minded and had the best interest of our students and community in mind. This seemed to be a common thread when talking to people that know him and have worked with/for him. Parents, community members, teachers and administrators I’ve talked to about Dr. Sanchez and his work over the past 4 years have all shared similar experiences.
One suggestion was that certain people haven’t really taken the time to get to know him and are being misinformed by mainstream media, but I feel it is much deeper than that. Could it be because he’s a proud brown Tejano who stands tall for our students and genuinely wants to improve the quality of education for ALL students across the district? Could it also be because he is bringing up brown bureaucrats into positions of power?
This fact cannot be ignored, especially when you connect the dots and look at the bigger picture and at what is happening in America today.
How is it that Trump got elected?
Is it not due in part to the fact that the white men in power, who embody the ideologies and beliefs that this racist system was founded on, are no longer the majority and are losing their power?
Jimmy Lovelace was the chair of TUSD’s Audit Committee under Pedicone and was forced off by Dr. Sanchez and the board majority when they added a residency requirement.
Lovelace is also the chair of ‘TUSD Kids First’ which was an independent campaign against Cam Juarez and Kristel Foster. It was bought and paid for in large part by Jim Click and Jimmy Lovelace. There was more than $35,000 put into this effort. It ensured Cam Juarez didn’t get re-elected and it is the first step in getting rid of Sanchez and putting the power back into the hands of those working to maintain the status quo.

He reflexionado mucho acerca de las elecciones locales últimamente, en particular las elecciones del la mesa directiva de TUSD. Es realmente repugnante que Jim Click y sus compas compraron las elecciones para Mark Stegeman y personas como él quienes no tienen los mejores intereses de nuestros niños en mente.
Jim Click es conocido como filántropo, ya que hace donaciones a las organizaciones benéficas y a la educación. Pero en realidad, ¿será esto un disfraz para verse bien mientras asigna a personas a puestos de poder para aprobar políticas que realmente dañan a las comunidades de gente de color? En serio parece ser así.

Jim Click es miembro del consejo de líderes del sur de Arizona (Southern Arizona Leadership Council en inglés) y si mal no recuerdo, John Pedicone fue el candidato que eligieron para postularse como superintendente de TUSD el año _____. Con la ayuda de Stegeman en la mesa ellos aseguraron su elección. Sus rivales fueron 3 candidatos (Kenneth Baca, Lupita Cavazos-Garcia y Edith Macklin Isquierdo) quienes segun yo hubieran representado mejor a los estudiantes de color en TUSD y quienes también apoyaron al muy exitoso programa de estudios mexico-americanos (Mexican-American Studies en inglés), el cual Pedicone después desmanteló. Stegeman formo parte de la mayoría de la mesa en aquel tiempo y se oponía abiertamente a MAS.
Juntos lograron cerrar muchas escuelas y deshacerce de MAS, un programa que estaba ayudando a que los estudiantes de color suban sus calificaciones en los exámenes, se gradúen de la high school y vayan a la universidad.
Fue una lucha agotadora que al final unió a la comunidad para luchar por nuestros estudiantes. Al final, la comunidad votó para cambiar la mayoría en la mesa y eligió personas que mejor representaban a TUSD (Cam Juárez y Kristel Foster).
Más del 70% de TUSD son Latin@s y alrededor de 80% son minorías étnicas, pero empezando en enero, la mesa tendrá solo una miembra Latina.
A eso simplemente no le encuentro sentido. ¿Cómo puede ser que a un distrito que consta de casí un 80% de minorías étnicas lo represente una mesa que solamente consta de un 20% de minorías étnicas?
No me gusta hacer que las cosas se traten de raza pero en la condición actual que encontramos a nuestro país el tema de raza no se puede ignorar.
Estaba hablando con un administrador de TUSD hace poco sobre nuestro superintendente actual H.T. Sánchez. Esta persona dijo que no entiende cómo puede tanta gente odiar al Dr. Sánchez. Aunque pueda que no siempre estén de acuerdo, este administrador sentía que el Dr. Sánchez era muy competente, de mentalidad abierta y que tiene los mejores intereses de los estudiantes y la comunidad en mente. Esto parecía ser un tema común cuando hablaba con la gente que lo conoce y quienes han trabajado con/para él. Los padres de familia, miembros de la comunidad, maestros y administradores con todos los quienes he hablado acerca del Dr. Sánchez y su trabajo durante los últimos 4 años compartieron experiencias similares.
Una sugerencia que hubo fue que ciertas personas realmente no han intentado de conocerlo y están informándolos mal los medios de comunicación de corriente principal, pero creo que es más profundo que eso. ¿Puede que sea porque es un orgullosamente Tejano de color quien mantiene la cabeza alta para nuestros estudiantes y genuinamente quiere mejorar la calidad de la educación para TODOS los estudiantes en el distrito? ¿Será también porque está ayudando a que los burócratas de color obtengan puestos de poder?
Este hecho no se puede ignorar, especialmente cuando uno ata cabos y mira al panorama general y a lo que está pasando en Estados Unidos hoy en día.
¿Cómo fue posible la elección de Trump?
Por una parte, ¿no fue debido al hecho de que los hombres anglosajones con poder, quienes representan las ideologías y creencias en la cuales fue fundado este sistema racista, ya no son la mayoría y están perdiendo su poder?
Jimmy Lovelace era el presidente del Comité de Auditoría de TUSD bajo Pedicone y fue expulsado por el Dr. Sánchez y la mayoría de la mesa directiva cuando agregaron un requisito de residencia.
Lovelace también es el presidente de ‘TUSD Kids First‘, una campaña independiente contra Cam Juarez y Kristel Foster. Fue comprado y pagado en gran parte por Jim Click y Jimmy Lovelace. Invirtieron mas de $35,000 al esfuerzo. Garantizó que Cam Juarez no fuera reelegido y es el primer paso para deshacerse de Sánchez y devolver el poder a las manos de quienes trabajan para mantener el status quo.
