Today, January 6, is Jon Miles 76th birthday.
He is my close friend and has been a central advisor to Casa Maria from day one!
For many years, many decades, he has been the rock, the heart and the soul of the struggle for peace and justice in Tucson.
He has lived in Tucson since being a teenager and he knows all about the desert, the mountains, the outdoors.
He was drafted into the army and fought in Vietnam and was the president of Vets for Peace for many years.
He worked at the mines and was a big leader in the Steelworkers Union.
He has lots of stories about all of it, good stories, filled with political content and history. And he is extremely well-read.
All this is most impressive, but it’s his toughness alongside his love and compassion for pretty much everyone he meets. That is what has always impressed me most about Juan.
Last month he got operated on at the VA to get cancer cut out of his lung. They had to break his rib in order to get to it. The docs declared it a successful operation but then called him two days later and told him there was cancer in his lymph nodes. So yesterday they radiated him and today he’s getting the first of four chemo therapy treatments.
So I’m sure Juan feels like crap on his birthday.
Pray for him-And if you haven’t had the privilege of knowing him, learning from him, hearing his stories…you still got time.

Hoy, 6 de Enero, es el cumpleaños número 76 de Jon Miles.
¡Él es mi amigo y ha sido asesor de Casa María desde el primer día!
Por muchos años, muchas décadas, él ha sido la piedra, el Corazón y el alma en las luchas para buscar la paz y la justicia en Tucson.
Él ha vivido en Tucson desde que era muy joven y él sabe muchos acerca del desierto, las montañas, la naturaleza.
Él fue obligado a ir al ejército y peleo en la guerra de Vietnam y fue el presídete de los Veteranos por la Paz por muchos años.
Trabajo en las minas y fue un importante líder en la unión de los Trabajadores del Metal.
Él tiene muchas historias acerca de eso, buenas historias con mucho contenido acerca de la política e historia.
Y le gusta mucho la lectura.
Todo esto es muy impresionante, pero su tenacidad junto con su amor y compasión por la mayoría de las personas que él conoce. Eso es lo que más me impresiona acerca de Juan.
El mes pasado él fue operado en el hospital de los Veteranos para remover el cáncer de sus pulmones. Tuvieron que quebrarle sus costillas para poder hacerlo. Los doctores dijeron que la operación había sido un éxito, pero dos días después le llamaron para decirle que tenía cáncer los ganglios linfáticos. Así que ayer le dieron radiación y hoy es su primera quimioterapia de 4 que va a tener.
Así que estoy seguro que Juan se siente muy mal en su cumpleaños.
Oren por el- Y si no han tenido el privilegio de conocerlo, aprender de él, escuchar sus historias… todavía estas a tiempo.
