After a recent morning at Casa Maria, my back had a serious talk with me, an aging baby-boomer who’d prefer to live in denial of both. Lifting boxes was no longer in the cards, Back said – you’ll have to find something else to do with Casa Maria. So Brian graciously offered the option of occasionally writing words for the blog.
It is humbling to even think of doing so. The ministry done in this place is a daily and literal practice of Matthew 25. The ministry done in this place is also a daily and prophetic rebuttal of what the world promotes in terms of who should be valued and who can be ignored – a view that I shudder to think has now been given the keys to the White House and the nuclear codes.
But – and here is the key point – they have not been given the keys of the kingdom. Like Dr. King’s words about the arc of the moral universe, the coming of God’s reign may be long but it bends inevitably toward justice. Justice whose foundation is not punitive, but redemptive and restorative. Of human worth. Of human value. Justice that is not up for sale to the highest bidder, but justice that is up for incarnation in the meeting of the most basic human needs. Food. Shelter. Clothing. Love.
You know, the stuff that is the daily work of the people of Casa Maria.

UNA VISTA DE UN HOMBRE SOBRE CASA MARIA

Después de trabajar recientemente en la cocina de Casa Maria, tuve una conversación serie con mi espalda. Aunque lo quiero admitir o no, levantar cajas pesadas ya no es una opción para un hombre envejecido como yo. Mi espalda me dijo – vas a tener que buscar otra manera de ayudar en Casa Maria. Así que Brian ofreció graciosamente la opción de ocasionalmente escribir palabras para el blog.
Es humillante siquiera pensar en hacerlo. El ministerio hecho en este lugar es una práctica diaria y literal de Mateo 25. El ministerio hecho en este lugar es también una refutación diaria y profética de lo que el mundo promueve en términos de quién debe ser valorado y quién puede ser ignorado – una punta de vista que me da miedo solo en pensar que ahora se ha dado las llaves de la Casa Blanca y los códigos nucleares.
Pero – y este es el punto mas importante – no les han dado las llaves del reino. Como las palabras del Dr. King sobre el arco del universo moral, la venida del reinado de Dios puede ser larga pero se inclina inevitablemente hacia la justicia. Justicia que no esta basado en ser punitivo, pero en ser redentora y restauradora. Del valor humano. Justicia que no se vende al mejor postor, pero justicia que se presta en la encarnación de satisfacer las necesidades humanas más básicas. Alimentos. Abrigo. Ropa. Y Amor.
Sabes, lo que es el trabajo diario de la gente de Casa María.
