“In a final prayer, the Pope urged Mexicanos to make their country into a land of opportunity where there will be no need to emigrate in order to dream, no need to be exploited in order to work, no need to make the poverty and despair of many the opportunism of a few, a land that will not have to mourn men and women, young people, and children who are destroyed at the hands of the dealers of death.”
Agreed, it’s an ugly moment in Mexico’s history and the country has been submerged in blood and violence.
But maybe the Holy Father should learn more about Mexico’s history, about who have been the ultimate dealers of death, the United States. Maybe he should read the book I’m reading, “The Annexation of Mexico,” by John Ross.
Mexico is not and has not been a land of opportunity because Mexico has most definitely been the Junior Partner in this ongoing annexation by the U.S. The Senior Partner, the U.S. (with the help of a very small number of sell-out rich Mexicanos), has treated the Junior Partner like a conquered people in a conquered land. The history of Mexico up to the present day is really the history of the United States/Mexico.
Instead of instituting a Marshall Plan for Mexico like they did for Germany after World War II, Mexico gets NAFTA and other trade deals that make the rich more rich and the huge majority of poor Mexicanos more poor.
The majority of people go to do whatever they can to survive. How much power or how many choices do most of them have!
I suggest that gente read the Sean Penn article in the Rolling Stone in which he interviews Chapo Guzman. Penn points out that when he was 9 he was surfing Malibu while Chapo at 9 was already toiling in the marijuana and poppy fields in his native Sinaloa. Chapo makes it clear that he grew up poor and that “there was no other way there still isn’t a way to survive, no way to work in our economy to be able to make a living.”
The late great Tucson author, Chuck Bowden in the intro to his classic book “Down By the River,” states that the rise of the drug cartels in Mexico has produced the largest redistribution of wealth in modern history.
It is a crying shame that this redistribution, this challenge to the rich people of Mexico and the U.S. has had to be so thoroughly bloody and so advantageous to so many rich people, such as those who own private prisons in this country. Chapo also told Sean Penn that there was a host of major corporations both within Mexico and abroad, through which his money has been laundered (he asked Penn not to name them in print).
The other issue is consumption. The drugs trafficked are consumed largely in this country. We are at least as morally culpable for all the deaths and suffering and corruption that is Mexico today. How much more can poor Mexicanos do to make theirs a land of opportunity?
Maybe the Holy Father should beseech the people of the Senior Partner – the U.S. – to repent, change, and do justice for places such as Mexico.
And ya know what? Maybe he did just that when he called out Trump and all the racist haters who want to call themselves Christians while building walls instead of bridges and persecuting their Brown neighbors to the south!

EL PAPA CONDENA A LOS DISTRIBUIDORES DE DROGAS ‘COMERCIO DE MUERTE’ en la Misa en México dice el encabezado del Daily Star el Lunes (2-15-2016)
“en la oración final, el papa pide a los Mexicanos hacer de su país un país de oportunidades donde no haya necesidad de emigrar a otro lugar para lograr sus sueños, sin necesidad de ser explotado para trabajar, o de ser la pobreza y desesperación de muchos y la oportunidad de unos cuantos, una tierra que no tenga que llorar a mujeres y hombre, jóvenes y niños que son destruidos en las manos del comercio de muerte.”
Yo estoy de acuerdo, es un momento muy triste en la historia de México, el país está sumergido en la violencia y la sangre. Pero quizás el Santo Padre debería aprender más de la historia de México, de quienes han sido los últimos comerciantes de muerte, Los Estados Unidos. Quizás el debería leer el libro que estoy leyendo, “The Annexation of Mexico,” de John Ross.
México no es, ni ha sido una tierra de oportunidades porque México ha sido definitivamente el Mayor Aliado en esta continua asociación con los Estados Unidos. El Mayor Aliado, de los Estados Unidos (con la ayuda de un pequeño número de ricos vendidos) han tratado al Mayor Aliado como gente conquistada en una tierra que se ha conquistado. La historia de México hasta el día de hoy es realmente la historia de los Estados Unidos/México.
En lugar de hacer un plan como se hizo en Alemania después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, México tiene NAFTA y otras ofertas de comercio que hace a los ricos más ricos y a los pobres más pobres.
La mayoría de la gente hace lo que sea necesario para sobrevivir. ¿cuantas opciones tienen?
Yo sugiero que la gente lea el artículo de Sean Penn en la revista Rolling Stone donde el entrevisto al Chapo Guzmán. El enfatiza que cuando él tenía 9 años el surfeaba en Mallibu mientras el Chapo a la misma edad ya cosechaba amapola y vendía mariguana en su natal Sinaloa. El Chapo deja muy en claro que el creció en la pobreza y que por eso “no había otra forma de sobrevivir, y todavía no la hay, no hay manera de trabajar en nuestra economía para vivir dignamente.”
Un gran autor de Tucson, Chuck bowden, en la introducción de su libro clásico Down By The River, el resalta que el aumento de los carteles de drogas en México ha contribuido a la riqueza más grande en la historia.
Es una vergüenza que esta contribución a la gente rica de México y los Estados Unidos, haya tenido que ser por el derramamiento de sangre y muy provechoso para ellos, a gente rica como los que tienes prisiones privadas en este país. El Chapo también le dijo a Sean Penn que había propietarios de grandes corporaciones en México y el extranjero que lavaban su dinero (él le pidió a Sean que no pusiera los nombres).
El otro problema es el consumo. Los traficantes de drogas han absorbido este país. Por lo menos moralmente somos culpables de todos los sufrimientos, muertes y corrupción que hay hoy día en México. ¿Qué tanto más tienen que hacer los mexicanos pobres para tener una tierra de oportunidades?
Quizás el Santo Padre debería rogarle a la gente del Mayor Aliado y los Estados Unidos, que se arrepientan, cambien y hagan justicia por lugares como México.
¿Y saben qué? ¡Quizás eso hizo cuando le dijo a Trump y a los racistas que se dicen cristianos y construyen una barrera en lugar de un puente y persiguen a los de piel morena!
