Raising the price of getting on the bus is an attack on bus riders living in poverty and those hovering on the edge of living in poverty.
To raise the fares (Mr. Ortega is proposing 10 cents this year and 15 cents next year) would truly be balancing the budget on the backs of poor people.
The projected revenue to be gained (approximately $400,000 this year) is an illusion because it will be offset by decreased ridership. The bureaucrats and the elected officials know that decreased ridership occurs with fare increases and significant service cuts.
It does not make sense to attack our award winning bus system at this time. Now is the time to hold the line on transit until we, as a City, figure out a dedicated funding source for Transit and increased and improved funding mechanisms for all of the core services of the City (Cops, Fire, Parks and Transportation/Transit).
In spirit of collaboration with the City Manager and the Council, the BRU is prepared to go along with the City on cuts to the following:

In a recent Council Meeting on the budget, City Manager Ortega cautioned the Council against making cuts that would help them in the short term but be disastrous in the long run.
BROADWAY WIDENING
Also the Broadway widening is most definitely a transit issue. We are advocating that any changes to Broadway immediately include a DEDICATED TRANSIT LANE and do not include bus pullouts.
LA UNION DE LOS PASAJEROS DEL CAMION RESPONDEN A LA RECOMENDACIÓN DEL ADMINISTRADOR DE LA CIUDAD EN EL BALANCE DEL PRESUPUESTO
Aumentar el precio de los que usan el camión es un ataque a los que viven en la pobreza y a los que están al borde de vivir en ella.
Aumentar el costo (El Sr. Ortega propone 10 centavos este año y 15 centavos el próximo año) realmente va a balancear el presupuesto a expensas de la gente pobre.
El presupuesto que se planea para ser ganado (aproximadamente $400,000 este año) es una ilusión porque van a disminuir los pasajeros. Los funcionarios y los oficiales electos saben que la disminución de pasajeros ocurre cuando aumentan el costo de los camiones y recortan los servicios.
No tiene sentido atacar el sistema del camión en este momento. Ahora es el momento de esperar en el carril de transito hasta que Nosotros, como Ciudad, calculemos una fuente de ingresos únicamente para el transito e incrementar y mejorar el sistema de fondos para todos los servicios básicos de la Ciudad (Policías, Bomberos, Parques y Transportación/Transito).
En un espíritu de colaboración con el Administrador de la Ciudad y el Consejo, la Unión de los Pasajeros del Camión está preparada para los recortes de la Ciudad que tengan sentido para todos.
En una junta reciente del Consejo sobre el presupuesto, el Administrador de la Ciudad Ortega advirtió al Consejo de no hacer recortes que los favoreciera a corto plazo y que sería desastroso con el tiempo.
AMPLIANDO EL BULEVARD BROADWAY
Además el ampliar el bulevar es en definitiva un asusto de tránsito. Nosotros estamos recomendando que cualquier cambio en el bulevar Broadway incluya inmediatamente un carril para el camión sin las paradas que tiene que salirse del tráfico, sino un carril únicamente para el camión.
