Long time Casa Maria worker Chad Owens died in his sleep on Sunday, October 1, here in his bedroom at Casa Maria.
He was 69 years old.
He had returned 5 days earlier from the hospital where he had a tumor removed from near his spine. He was scheduled to begin chemo for lung cancer.
So he was in pain, not happy about it and had readily expressed his desire to move on.
Chad was known for being a very hard working hombre. Everyday, 7 days a week, he got to the soup kitchen at 4 am to start the coffee, help the cooks prepare the soup and then go do the food pick ups. He had really good relationships with everyone at the Safeways and Food Citys who give us food they can’t use.
He was from Monroe, Michigan and in past lives he played tennis at USC, tended bar in Washington D.C. and did time living on the streets of Tucson due to his life-long struggle with alcohol. He was a big fan of the Michigan Wolverines and the Tigers, the Lions and the Pistons no matter how lousy they were.
Chad chose to work every single morning in pain, until the day he went to the hospital, which was about 10 days before he died. I told him the morning he left that I really liked how he was going out, working right up to the end and then going out in a blaze of glory. And I meant it. That’s how I wanna go out!
Chad is already greatly missed here at Casa Maria.
He is going to be cremated and we plan to celebrate a mass here at Casa Maria in his honor on Monday, October 16 at 10 am. Msgr. Cahalane will celebrate.

Chad Owens murió el domingo, 1 de octubre. El trabajo en Casa Maria por muchos años y levantaba la comida de las tiendas.
Tenia 69 años.
El regreso a Casa Maria del hospital 5 días antes de que murió donde le operaron un tumor cerca a su columna. Estaba programado para iniciar la quimioterapia para el cáncer de pulmón.
Tenia mucho dolor, e expresó su deseo de pasar.
El trabajaba muy duro. Todos los días el llegaba a la cocina a las 4 de la mañana para empezar el cafe, ayudar a los cocineros empezar la sopa, y luego iba a todas las tiendas a levantar la comida. Tenia buenas relaciones con todos los trabajadores de los Food Citys y Safeways que nos dan la comida que ya no pueden usar.
El era de Monroe, Michigan y en tiempos pasados jugo tenis por USC, fue cantinero, y vivió en las calles de Tucson por la batalla que tuvo con el alcoholismo.
Chad quiso seguir trabajando hasta el día que fue al hospital, 10 dias antes de que murió. Le dije el día que fue al hospital que realmente me gustó cómo él estaba saliendo, trabajando hasta el final y luego saliendo en un resplandor de gloria. ¡Así quiero salir yo!
Lo extrañamos mucho en Casa Maria.
Él va a ser cremado y planeamos celebrar una misa aquí en Casa María en su honor el lunes, 10 de octubre a las 10 de la mañana. Mons. Cahalane celebrará.
