Bravo to TUSD Board Member Kristel Foster

< 1 min read By Brian Flagg, Bravo to TUSD Board Member Kristel Foster for her heartfelt, courageous and confrontational (in an extremely positive way) letter to the editor (Star, 2-15-2015). http://tucson.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-to-the-editor/article_6e9438b4-70b6-5639-be2b-25a171936fb5.html If you missed it, she calls out fellow board member Mike Hicks for his support of SB1371, which would eliminate $64 from the district. He isn’t the only one seeking to put down TUSD and destroy public education. May Kristel Fosters’ willingness to speak out help to transform us all into spirit warriors in defense of public education.

THE REGGIO EMILIA APPROACH AND WHAT THE RESEARCH SUPPORTS

3 min read Special thanks to the Tucson Children’s Project, Mimi Gray, Pauline Baker, Ben Mardel, Teresa Acevedo, and especially Lella Gandini of Reggio Emilia, Italy for making this all possible. by Cesar Aguirre As an avid supporter of public education and an extremely involved parent at Ochoa Elementary, I have done a lot of research and studied best practices of early childhood education. Over the weekend the Tucson Children’s Project held a conference titled “What the Research Supports”. I was in attendance, along with many dedicated teachers from Ochoa. Ochoa is a Reggio Inspired Magnet school. It’s the only public school of

A LETTER TO SYLVIA CAMPOY

2 min read  February 10, 2015 Dear Sylvia, Thanks for coming to Casa Maria. I think we fundamentally disagree with you on some main themes, but talking with you and Terry Higuera really helped us think about desegregation and how we as parents and the larger community can move forward to advocate and organize for a more just TUSD. Ultimately it’s all about better educated kids. We understand that no matter what is just or unjust, right or wrong, there is a court order that exists. But it is only a court order, not a commandment that came down from heaven. We would

Contrary to what you might read in the newspaper, IT’S A NEW DAY IN TUCSON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT-

< 1 min read By Brian Flagg, There is now a new three person board majority that replaced Superintendant John Pedicone with a new Superintendent, H.T. Sanchez. H.T. has provided a new type of leadership. He has spearheaded a pay rise for teachers, reduced class size, aggressively defended the Culturally Relevant Curriculum from new attacks from the North, and refused to give up more legal fees for de-segregation lawyers who have milked the de-segregation lawsuit for 40 years. He and the Board are trying to use desegregation dollars to provide for increased academic achievement at magnet schools instead of only trying to integrate them,

MARIAS’ MAGNIFICAT, MY FAVORITE BIBLE PASSAGE, IS TODAY’S GOSPEL READING!

3 min read by Brian Flagg, The Magnificat (Luke 1, 46-56) And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my savior; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name, and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him. He has shown the power of his arm, he has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The

IN DEFENSE OF AUGIE ROMERO

2 min read by Cesar Aguirre On the second page of today’s Daily Star (12/2/14) the headline reads, “State reviewing TUSD on Mexican American Studies”. This is because Augustine Romero was baited into an argument over whether or not Mexican American Studies had returned to TUSD in the form of a federally required Culturally Relevant Curriculum (CRC) that is being implemented because of a 40 year old desegregation lawsuit. Augustine Romero is the new principal at Pueblo High school and from where we sit, on the south side of Tucson, we see a man who is passionate about educational justice, who fights for

END THE DESEGREGATION LAWSUIT NOW!

3 min read We at Casa Maria, along with others, are seriously contemplating undertaking a campaign to defend our schools that would look like this: To: The Plaintiffs (especially Sylvia Campoy) and the lawyers (MALDEF and Ruben Salter) END THE DESEGREGATION LAWSUIT NOW! The federal judge says that Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) needs to comply with the de-segregation lawsuit. So last spring TUSD came forth with a plan that evaluated the progress made in regards to the integration of their magnet schools. The plan said that Ochoa and Robison Elementary, Utterback Middle, and Pueblo High have received “elimination warnings”, giving them one

Power to the Parents

6 min read by Cesar Aguirre, It is a quarter to six, Dr. Sanchez has arrived early. The room is still empty, the seats dotted with a few parents as we prepare ourselves for the meeting. I feel nervous, anxious, and worried. All the hard work we’ve done, talking to other parents and informing them on what is going on in our school, our district, and in public education across the country. Where is everybody? Why aren’t they here yet? I start to think about all the movements across the country I’ve been reading about. The walk-outs in Chicago. The Grassroots Educational Movement
