DOWNTOWN REDEVELOPMENT IS BASED ON STUDENTS ALCOHOL COMSUMPTION?

2 min read by Jimmy Ojeda On Sunday March 9th, 2014 the Arizona Daily Star reported on the concern that exists among bar owners and UA students regarding the hours of operation for the streetcar.  They would prefer “running the street car as late as – or later than – 2 am., making it more convenient for late-night riders along the bar heavy route, which connects the UA campus to Fourth Avenue and downtown.” The current plan is for the streetcar to run until midnight on Thursdays and Fridays and until 2 a.m. on Saturdays. The street car has already cost close to

2 min read by Brian Flagg, Tonight the Tucson City Council will vote on whether to adopt Cesar Chavez’s birthday as the 11th official paid holiday for city employees. We at Casa Maria wrote a letter of support. Cesar Chavez is our hero. I even met him once. But how can City Council members vote to institute a holiday for Cesar Chavez, the beloved labor leader and founder of the United Farm Workers Union, and at the same time, in the same budget cycle, vote to balance their budget on the backs of poor bus riders? Voting to economically oppress poor people, while

More than 200 people showed up to say to the Council: DON’T RAISE BUS FARES – DON’T BALANCE YOUR BUDGET ON THE BACKS OF TUCSON BUSRIDERS LIVING IN POVERTY! This event was sponsored by the Tucson Bus Riders Union and a good time was had by all. One hundred more bus riders signed up for the Union. They received an official laminated TBRU membership card with their pictures in addition to bright yellow TBRU t-shirts (thanks to Dwight Metzger and The

Raising Bus Fares is a Moral Issue

5 min read by Brian Flagg, On Wednesday, February 19, the Tucson Mayor and Council will decide whether to raise bus fares. The fare would go from $1.50 to1.7 5 and the low income fare from .50 to .65. A monthly pass would go from $26 to $43. They will also decide whether to cut routes. This might not seem like much to some people, but for families mired in poverty who come to places such as Casa Maria and the Food Bank to beg for food to feed their kids, it’s a big deal. People simply cannot afford it. In a recent

UPDATE!

2 min read          The City’s WAR on Bus Riders and the Bus Riders Union’s Campaign for Transit Justice! We signed up 150 new members for the Tucson Bus Riders Union at a Membership Campaign Kickoff party outside of City Hall on January 22. Our goal is to sign up ONE THOUSAND new bus riding members and their supporters by the time the City budget is finalized in April or May. The Mayor (who doesn’t seem to like us?) pulled the fare increase off their January 22 agenda. It will be heard on either February 4th or February 18th. We will

BUS RIDERS PRESENCE AT MLK MARCH A SUCCESS

2 min read by Cesar Aguirre It was a warm, bright morning as Mayor Rothschild spoke to a large crowd at the U of A mall, along with many other politicians including Karen Uhlich, Regina Romero and Richard Fimbres. There we were, right up front, with two large Tucson Bus Riders Union banners. As we listened to them speak about justice, equality and human rights, a new hope began to arise that we could possibly work with our all-Democrat City Council members to insure that fares are not increased, routes are not cut, and that there be a true, transparent public process in

< 1 min read In 2014 we at Casa Maria are going to do absolutely everything in our power to influence our Democratic friends on the Mayor and City Council to not oppress the poor through their Budget priorities. This means NO BUS FARE INCREASES. Council members Karin Uhlich and Richard Fimbres have already committed to this. We need 2 more votes

The Huckster’s Boxing Day Gifts

2 min read A really smart friend of Casa Maria shared this commentary with us. It refers to the banner head line story in the Star ‘Red Tape Holding Up Important Roadwork’ on December 26, 2013 The English had a custom of giving the hired help the day off and a “box” of goodies the day after Christmas.  Even the working poor got to retire to the basement on Dec. 26th and have a little party after they’d cleaned up the royals’ mess. On yesterday’s front page County Manager Chuck Huckleberry proposed Boxing Day gifts for those ‘least in need’ in an article
