Yo’ Daily Star, What’s your beef with H.T. and TUSD?

3 min readby Cesar Aguirre As I looked at today’s headlines I could not help but feel somewhat discouraged and deflated, which was the total opposite of how I felt last night. Yesterday I spent my day at the Strategic Planning Session, an all-day discussion to begin the planning of the future of TUSD. Afterwards I felt full of hope and optimism because for the first time I felt that the broader Tucson Community was finally being asked to be part of the rebuilding of the district. This morning’s headline on the front page of the Arizona Daily Star read, “Ground is

BEING ON TV WAS FUN, NOW LETS GET REAL ABOUT PUBLIC EDUCATION

2 min readby Cesar Aguirre Yesterday I was on AZ Illustrated talking about poverty. This is a very deep issue to discuss in an eleven minute interview. We weren’t even able to scratch the surface. The bus riders’ issues are very important to me and I was able to talk a little about how fare increases would afflict those who depend on Sun Tran for their daily transportation needs, many of whom live in poverty, but what I am really passionate about is public education. After a Bus Riders Union meeting last night I grabbed the paper and found a very interesting

The Huckster’s Boxing Day Gifts

2 min readA really smart friend of Casa Maria shared this commentary with us. It refers to the banner head line story in the Star ‘Red Tape Holding Up Important Roadwork’ on December 26, 2013 The English had a custom of giving the hired help the day off and a “box” of goodies the day after Christmas.  Even the working poor got to retire to the basement on Dec. 26th and have a little party after they’d cleaned up the royals’ mess. On yesterday’s front page County Manager Chuck Huckleberry proposed Boxing Day gifts for those ‘least in need’ in an article

Take Action Against Low Pay!

2 min readby  Jimmy Ojeda Stand with striking fast food workers on Thursday, December 5th at 12:00 pm, on the Mc Donald’s 3856 E. Speedway (Speedway/Alvernon).  Workers will demand $15 an hour and the right to form a union without retaliation. Employers like McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy’s are raking in enormous profits while workers mostly adults with families, don’t get paid enough to cover basic needs like food, rent, health care and transportation. These employees are risking our jobs as they continue to stand up and say ENOUGH. Everyone who believes in justice should support them. It’s time to give every worker a

Wireless Disconnection

5 min readby Cesar Aguirre, A few weeks ago I was blessed with the opportunity to take my girls out to a pizza place for dinner. After playing arcade games with Alissa and Jasmine we sat down together to enjoy our pizza and salad. As we ate we talked about our day, they both told me about what they had done in school. I told them about my day in the soup kitchen. After eating I cut them loose to play a little more while I got a box for our leftovers. Once I had done that I sat for a moment and

Message to the Three Sonoran’s: TUSD is doing something good

5 min readby Jimmy Ojeda Usually TUSD Board meetings are not that exciting, but last night I attended a great meeting with Cesar, Brian, and three parents from Ochoa Elementary: Maria, Adriana and Marisa. The Board voted unanimously to defend barrio schools. Many of the barrio schools such as Ochoa, Pueblo, Carrillo, and Davis were afraid they were going to lose funding for their magnet programs because they do not meet desegregation standards.  It was great to be among a number of parents, students and teachers from Pueblo High School, led by teacher Jessica Mejia. After listening to students, teachers, and concerned

Controversial Desegregation Proposal to be Voted on by TUSD Board on Tuesday Oct. 22 (A South Tucson Perspective)

4 min readby Cesar Aguirre Last night my colleagues from Casa Maria and I attended a Magnet community forum at Ochoa Community Magnet School. A little over two weeks ago we attended a similar forum at Pueblo Magnet High School where parents, teachers, students, and community members came full force and defended their Magnet program. The questions and comments were great; they ranged from the lack of equity, to the focus on negativity rather than highlighting and advertising all of the great qualities offered through the Magnet program. TUSD Magnet programs were originally created to please a Federal Desegregation order. The mentality

Rio Nuevo

3 min readby Brian Flagg $250 million City taxpayer dollars down the drain, up in smoke, squandered, siphoned off by who, corrupt individuals? While at the same time, bus riders are being threatened with fareincreases, city pools are closed, and there is little or no money for KIDCO or job training.  In this city, the City of Tucson, with the sixth worst poverty rate in the entire country. The Arizona Daily Star (Rio Nuevo Probe: Bad – but not criminal, October 11, 2013) reported that the Arizona Attorney General’s office released a memo outlining its decision to not prosecute anyone.  They referred to the

Pima County Interfaith Candidate Forum

4 min readby Kassandra Manriquez To keep the Ronstadt or do away with it, to keep bus fares affordable or butcher the budgets of Tucson’s poorest … On Sunday October 6, over 300 community members sat in front of several City Council members at Sacred Heart Parish who were present to discuss JobPath, Sun Tran bus fares, and the development of Ronstadt Transit Center. This discourse took place in the context of poverty. Community members sat in wooden pews and listened to City Council members discuss community issues; we cheered, we nodded our heads in disapproval, blah blah blah. However, the most powerful portion of the

Injustice

2 min readby Brian Flagg A few nights ago I was in a meeting with a City Council member who said that ten years of not raising fares on the bus riders (they were slightly raised 2 years ago) is a disservice to bus riders, that they need lead time so that they can get used to the idea that they must pay more. But why? Why does balancing the city budget have to include increased hardship for many of the poorest people in Tucson? This is plain and simple an unjust mindset. Instead, maybe these politicians should be preparing the U
